E-Penpal Program

Introduction

To enrich the "mutual understanding" between nations that is at the heart of the Fulbright Teacher Exchange, I will try to connect interested students at Boston Latin and Eyuboglu schools using the internet. Email can make international communication simple and fast.

Some disclaimers: I will be making these matches amidst a very busy year of preparations and teaching in a new country. I will not have regular internet access or much time. I cannot promise quick response, and I cannot promise you a match.

What I Ask of You (Please read carefully)

If you request a penpal, I ask you to make the committment to email your penpal at least 4-5 times through the year. Once you "break the ice," you may find that an ongoing relationship is fun and interesting. The duration of your relationship is up to both of you. If you find that your penpal stops writing, don't be offended; probably they are too busy or simply don't email that much. Your emails will be private, but you need to remember that you will be representing your family, your school and your nation (wow!). Please be polite, positive and appropriate. Remember that you are communicating across cultures. Don't assume. Instead, ask questions and be thoughtful.

Things to Talk About (Just some ideas)

  • Introduce yourself, your family
  • Describe your neighborhood, your school, your life
  • What are your activities, your interests, your hobbies
  • Discuss music, sports
  • What are your plans for the future?
  • What do you know/not know about the other's country
